Point: Modify menu.lst as before.

Boot machine with LiveCD, as Ubuntu-livecd, SLAX, etc.

Mount HDD

sudo gedit /media/disk/boot/grub/menu.lst

Comment out the new kernel, like

title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=…
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet

to

#title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
#root (hd0,0)
#kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=…
#initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
#quiet
Reboot.
